Helping Your Baby or Child Swim

Helping Your Baby or Child Swim

Thursday 25th April, 2019

Taking your young child in a pool for the first time needn’t be a daunting time for a parent. Not only is it an opportunity for memories, but it should also be great fun! We’ve laid out a few tips for your little first-time swimmer, to help you make the most of the pool and set them up for a lifetime of swimming.

Train them in the bath
The best way to get your child used to the water is the simplest method too! Gently pour water over them and, if necessary, hop in with them.  This allows you to get them accustomed to the sensations associated with water so it doesn’t feel so new when they are in the pool.

Get them used to the sights and sounds
You won’t be able to exactly replicate a pool, but it won’t hurt to make some light splashing noises or let your child watch you enjoy the water, as this will help them get used to the sounds and sights associated with a busy swimming pool.

Show them their ears can go underwater
This will be a new feeling for your little one, so gently lower their ears in to the water once they are comfortable floating with you. Do so in short intervals so they don’t get too concerned with the new feeling and keep smiling and laughing throughout!

Keep trying and take it slowly
It’s easy to feel like it’s not working if you’re child isn’t enjoying themselves but persevere and you will get there! Get them used to the bits they don’t enjoy, and before long they will be happy doing them.

Bond in the water
Let’s not forget, it’s not all about the swimming. Skin to skin contact and splashing around with your child is a great bonding experience for both of you. Creating confidence in the water is always easier when you are both relaxed and happy.

Finally, have fun!
It shouldn’t feel like a task to take your child swimming, so don’t let it become one. Keep smiling, laughing and enjoying yourself and your little one will too. With enough practice you’ll find that you enjoy it just as much as they do!
